The USDA posted a notice that federal food aid will not be issued on Nov. 1 as contingency funds will not be used to continue SNAP benefits into November. SNAP helps about one in eight Americans purchase groceries, and benefits for this month were preserved by prior administrative steps. Democratic requests to use contingency funds were denied based on a USDA memo stating those funds are legally reserved for disasters. The government shutdown began Oct. 1 and is now the second-longest, and the cutoff would widen the shutdown’s impact unless a political resolution occurs soon.
