"Egg prices could rise by 50 percent on the current trajectory, Robert Schmack, head of the Bavarian Poultry Association, told local radio Monday."
""There are a relatively large number of outbreaks all over Germany and across all types of birds," he told broadcaster ZDF."
More than 500,000 farm birds have been culled in Germany after 31 bird flu outbreaks on farms since September, with rapid spread confirmed by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI). More than 1,500 wild cranes are believed to have died in Brandenburg. The worst affected states are Lower Saxony (eight outbreaks), Brandenburg (six) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (six). Thousands of culled chickens and dead ducks have been removed from poultry farms. Bird flu rarely infects humans but causes substantial agricultural losses and household shortages. Egg prices could rise by 50 percent on the current trajectory, and poultry associations call for mandatory indoor housing to contain spread.
