New Hawaii developments would radically reshape coastline
Briefly

Residents on the North Shore of Oahu are rallying against the Kamananui agritourism project, fearing it will threaten their rural lifestyle. The project proposes significant developments like hiking trails and a gondola system on agricultural land. The community is deeply concerned about preserving Mauna Kaala, a sacred mountain for some Native Hawaiians. This project is part of broader development initiatives in the area that threaten the local way of life. Developers are moving in following land sales from Dole plc, prompting growing resistance from residents.
The Kamananui project at Kaukonahua Ranch proposes adding hiking and biking trails, a zip line, all-terrain vehicle tours and an aerial tramway to its 2,300 acres of agricultural and cattle ranch land.
Many residents are fighting for Mauna Kaala, the island's highest peak, which is considered a sacred mountain by some Native Hawaiians, and must be protected.
Kaukonahua Ranch is part of a series of North Shore developments that are causing the community to rise up against changes threatening their rural lifestyle.
Racquel Hill-Achiu, vice chair of the North Shore Neighborhood Board, stated that multiple developers have set foot in the area due to Dole's liquidation of lands.
