"Ortolani's design retains the iconic shape of the AirPods Max earcups, but transforms a major part of its otherwise memorable silhouette. Most importantly, the band on top gets a revision, ditching the metal and tensile fabric for something more familiar. The new band gets made from the same material used on the Vision Pro, giving it flexibility within a much more lightweight and comfortable design. Sure, there has to be something inside providing structure, but the chances of it being stainless steel is low."
The AirPods Max launched in 2020 and has not received a major design overhaul since, aside from a USB-C upgrade and new colors. Users report that the headset is heavy, can become uncomfortable, and sometimes develops interior condensation after prolonged use. A redesign proposes replacing the metal and tensile fabric headband with Vision Pro material to reduce weight and increase flexibility while widening the contact surface to reduce pressure on the cranium. An adjustable side knob alters earcup height and added buttons complement the existing Digital Crown. Cushioned earcups and lower vents address comfort and condensation concerns.
