Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, has achieved a significant legal victory against Apple, compelling the tech giant to alter payment policies in its App Store. Post a lengthy five-year dispute centered around exorbitant fees, Apple must now enable developers to offer alternative purchase paths without incurring high charges. This decision signals a fresh opportunity for competitiveness, reinstating popular games like Fortnite on iOS. While Apple plans to appeal the court ruling, they are required to comply with changes during the process.
"Apple's stay is denied by the 9th Circuit Court. The long national nightmare of the Apple tax is ended," Sweeney said on X on Wednesday.
"Apple is free to make money by fairly competing to offer services such as payments and ads to willing buyers," Sweeney added in his comments.
In a blog post on Thursday, Apple issued a defense of its global app emporium, noting that 90% of the transactions it facilitated didn't involve commission.
