The 'Sun Block' installation in Central Square aims to address heat islands as part of Cambridge's Shade is Social Justice program. Designed by architects Gabriel Cira and Matthew Okazaki, the piece features a mesh cube over concrete steps. Community feedback has been mostly positive, but the installation has also faced criticism, particularly on social media, where some locals have voiced confusion and discomfort regarding its appearance and functionality. The artists intended to create a significant shaded area while engaging local stakeholders in the design process.
While the other installations are located in parks, Sun Block is located in the cultural district of Central Square and is intended to be the most bold and creative one.
Shade is Social Justice is an opportunity for artists and designers to explore imaginative solutions to the problem of heat islands throughout the city, particularly in areas with the highest risks.
