"Thanks to Ava Byrd's fabulous costumes and Jeremy Letheule's hair designs and wigs, I found myself transported to 1940s New York where snappy dialog, moral ambiguity and unchecked ambition drive the action. Written by Mary Orr in 1946, The Wisdom of Eve became a successful Hollywood film starring Bette Davis in 1950 and went on to become the musical Applause! Applause!"
"Set in the competitive world of New York theater, The Wisdom of Eve tells of Eve (Anna Kosiarek), a young actress who manipulates her way into the world of Broadway star Margo (Sindu Singh) and begins to take over her life, not to mention her best friend Karen's (Allison Gamlen) husband. Singh flawlessly portrays the aging actress who befriends Eve, while Kosiarek easily transforms from Margo's biggest fan to unscrupulous tart."
Altarena Playhouse’s production of The Wisdom of Eve recreates 1940s New York with period costumes and wigs that reinforce film-noir tone. Mary Orr’s 1946 drama follows Eve, a young actress who manipulates Broadway star Margo and intrudes into her friend Karen’s life. Sindu Singh portrays aging star Margo flawlessly, while Anna Kosiarek shifts convincingly from devoted fan to unscrupulous interloper. Allison Gamlen handles the dual narrator/character role with comedic flair. Kimberly Ridgeway directs a 135-minute performance that maintains interest and pace. The run continues through Nov. 23 at Altarena Playhouse. Masquers Playhouse will next stage Catch Me If You Can.
