""Freud loved the way cocaine made him feel. And he was very interested in its psychological components. For one, it did make him feel better when he was sad.""
""He also was amazed at how it made him talk about things endlessly that he thought were locked away in his brain. Sound familiar? That's talk therapy, but without the toxic side effects of cocaine.""
""Woe to you, my Princess, when I come, I will kiss you quite red and feed you till you are plump. And if you are froward [contrary] you shall see who is the stronger, a gentle little girl who doesn't eat enough or a big wild man who has cocaine in his body....""
The OUTwright Festival, organized by Fuse Theatre Ensemble, will run from May 14 to June 7, showcasing a workshop production of Sugar Hole and a fully staged play about Freud's cocaine use. The play explores Freud's fascination with cocaine and its psychological effects, including its impact on his mood and thoughts. Dr. Howard Markel notes that Freud found cocaine beneficial for his sadness and for unlocking thoughts, drawing parallels to modern talk therapy without the drug's side effects. The production features a talented cast led by Heath Hyun Houghton as Freud.
