I paint extreme emotions': Rachel Jones on her riotously colourful paintings and her obsession with mouths
Briefly

Rachel Jones, a 34-year-old artist, critiques the simplistic use of the term 'beauty' in art. Her upcoming retrospective at Dulwich Picture Gallery marks a significant milestone, showcasing her vibrant abstract works alongside historical pieces. Since graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in 2019, Jones has gained notable recognition, including a Tate acquisition. Recently, she has expanded her artistic scope to include sound and performance, reflecting a desire to intertwine various mediums creatively. Despite stepping back from gallery representation, her innovative projects, such as the opera 'Hey Maudie', underscore her evolving practice.

It's good to learn those different ways of making and how they influence each other, she says, telling me that sound practice has become more embedded in her day-to-day thinking.
I also want to pour more energy into my karaoke performances, she says.
