""After 51 issues and nearly ten years, the title was discontinued in 2005, leaving behind a rich digital archive and a blueprint for future media. Peter Halley, a Neo-Conceptualist artist, launched Index in 1996 from his Chelsea studio as a New York–rooted cultural magazine inspired by Andy Warhol’s Interview and dissatisfaction with the contemporary art scene. Co-founded with curator Bob Nickas, Index combined art, design, fashion, film and music across 51 issues until its 2005 closure, creating a rich digital archive and a blueprint for future media. The title’s legacy continued through the 2014 Rizzoli anthology and a 2021 Instagram presence. A Paris retrospective by Wahter Studio frames Index as both photography exhibition and research centre, with a reading room offering iconic interviews and stories.
