A collection of over 150 works by John Everett Millais, including 19 paintings and personal artifacts, will be exhibited at Perth Art Gallery. The collection derives from a long-term loan by the artist's great-grandson, Geoffroy Millais. Key featured items include the painting Halcyon Weather and a watercolour portrait of Effie Gray. The exhibition, Millais in Perthshire, opens July 25 and will showcase more than 25 objects along with additional gallery holdings. Effie Gray's contributions to Millais's success are emphasized in the exhibition commentary.
It feels fitting that this collection finds its home in Perth, where the story of my great-grandparents began, says Geoffroy Millais.
When Euphemia Gray left her husband John Ruskin for John Everett Millais, it caused a public scandal in Victorian England.
[Effie's] gaze has a confidence to it, and she is casually holding a book or journal, as if pointing out her own intelligence.
The free exhibition entitled Millais in Perthshire will open 25 July at Perth Art Gallery featuring more than 25 key objects from the collection.
