Thikra: Night of Remembering From Akram Khan
"Thikra: Night of Remembering marks a celebration and a farewell. Akram Khan Company is celebrating its 25th anniversary, but this will be its final work before it winds up. Its founder, Akram Khan, is a restless spirit who has explored many stories, cultures and myths over a long career as a dancer and choreographer. He has also developed his own, unique choreographic language, rooted in the South Asian dance forms of kathak, in which he was trained, and bharatanatyam, blended with Western contemporary dance."
"Collaboration has always been one of the hallmarks of Khan's creativity. He has created work with sculptor Anish Kapoor, musician Nitin Sawhney, actress Juliette Binoche, dancer Sylvie Guillem, and most memorably, perhaps, English National Ballet, for which he adapted one of the sacred monsters of Romantic ballet, Giselle, into a raw, powerful contemporary work. For Thikra: Night of Remembering, Akram Khan came together with the Saudi visual artist Manal AIDowayan to create a work set in the desert of Saudi Arabia,"
Thikra: Night of Remembering marks both a celebration and a farewell as Akram Khan Company commemorates its 25th anniversary with its final work. Akram Khan has built a unique choreographic language rooted in kathak and bharatanatyam fused with Western contemporary dance after a long career exploring stories, cultures and myths. Khan seeks freedom to create outside a steady company, focusing on international, site-specific work exemplified by Thikra, which reached Sadler's Wells during an extensive tour and represents a new beginning. Collaboration has been central to Khan's practice, including partnerships with visual artist Manal AIDowayan for a desert-set piece in Saudi Arabia.
