He was one of a handful of riders ahead of a crash 600m from the line, with the rest of the field rolling home knowing they would not lose time due to the proximity of the accident to the finish."

The French rider beat Tobias Lund Andresen in a frantic finish over 147km from Nessebar to Burgas, with the finale affected by an accident about 600m from the line. Riders behind the crash rolled home without losing time because the incident occurred close to the finish. Magnier claimed his first Grand Tour win and became the first Frenchman to wear the pink jersey for overall lead since Bruno Armirail three years earlier. Jonathan Milan finished fourth after escaping the crash, while Jonas Vingegaard was also held up. Stage two runs from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo over 221km with hilly terrain.
