Sheenna Kleveno and Michael Taylor, passionate about tabletop gaming, are transforming the former Black Rose Irish Pub into The Familiar Place, a gaming-centric bar in Milwaukee. This welcoming venue, inspired by their experiences and community needs, aims to fill the gap left by the closure of Oak and Shield during COVID. With spacious gaming areas and an inclusive menu ranging from alcoholic beverages to family-friendly options, The Familiar Place seeks to establish itself as a home for both gamers and the wider community alike, planned to open soon after renovations and licensing.
One of the things I really love about gaming is that there's something for everybody. Everyone can enjoy some part of it.
Ever since COVID, when [the gaming pub] Oak and Shield closed, there hasn't been a place to just gather and play.
The Familiar Place, named for its welcoming ethos and as a nod to the couple's orange cat, Hono, is set to open in the coming months.
The menu is intentionally inclusive, designed to attract a wide range of patrons - including young adults and even families with kids.
