"The Lough Kinale Book Shrine highlights Ireland's rich medieval history, featuring exquisite craftsmanship and revealing connections between Irish monks and continental Europe, now showcased in Dublin."
"Following a lengthy conservation project, this remarkable artifact, alongside manuscripts confirming Irish origins, emphasizes the historical dialogue between Ireland and St. Gallen, enriching our understanding of early medieval Europe."
The Lough Kinale Book Shrine, discovered in a lake in County Longford, Ireland, and dating back to the 9th century, is now showcased after a 39-year conservation project. This significant artifact, adorned with medallions and bronze work, originally housed a cherished manuscript. Featured in the exhibition Words on the Wave at the National Museum of Ireland, it reveals connections between Irish monks and Europe. The exhibition also includes a Viking sword and a medieval brooch-pin, while scientific analysis confirmed that manuscripts from Switzerland were made from Irish hides, marking the first time they've been in Ireland in over a millennium.
