"Then I quickly realized, yeah, trying to tell stories about this history in 200-word bits didn't make any sense,"
"a unique and an interesting format to tell more of the story."
"But when I finished the podcast, I was like, there's still so much more to say and to process and to understand,"
"So the book was conceived."
A museum photo of Black women in wetsuits led Tara Roberts to Diving With a Purpose, a nonprofit focused on maritime archaeology of African slave-trade shipwrecks. Roberts left a media career, became a certified diver, and followed the nonprofit globally to surface submerged stories. Initial blogging proved too brief, prompting a six-episode National Geographic podcast, Into the Depths, and recognition as the 2022 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. Roberts then wrote Written in the Waters: A Memoir of History, Home, and Belonging, which braids her diving work with a personal search for identity as a Black American descendant of Africans seized by slave traders. Roberts is a National Geographic Explorer in Residence based in Atlanta and will speak at the Portland Book Festival on Nov. 8.
