Kelly Dever had been on family medical leave since earlier in the summer and her resignation became effective Sept. 1. A personnel order released by the Boston Police Department provided no further details about the circumstances of her resignation. Dever testified during Karen Read's second murder trial and faced combative questioning from defense attorney Alan Jackson. Dever said she initially told federal investigators she saw Brian Higgins and then-Chief Kenneth Berkowitz in the station garage "for a wildly long time" while Read's SUV was there, but later said she left before the vehicle arrived. Dever called that recollection a distorted memory and alleged the defense threatened to accuse her of perjury if she did not lie on the stand. Read was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges and convicted only of a drunk driving misdemeanor.
