Boston residents say they feel safer downtown compared to last year in new survey
""less safe""
""remarkably safe""
""Let's take stock of what's worked,""
""Let's celebrate the good work of many folks who are in this room and on the stage, but let's also figure out where we still need to be better.""
A survey of hundreds of residents and stakeholders found that only 33.7 percent now say they feel "less safe" in the downtown and Boston Common areas compared with the beginning of the year, down from 70.6 percent in November 2024. Ninety-two percent of respondents still view public safety as an urgent downtown issue. A public safety summit convened city and state officials, law enforcement, civic groups, faith leaders, and business associations to address drug use, petty crime, road safety, street appearance, and cleanliness. Panelists noted significant decreases in violent crimes and homicides while urging improvements on quality-of-life concerns.
