""He should be pissed. He should be very pissed. He should be upset," Sturm said of Lohrei. "He works hard. He's ready. He just waits for his opportunity. That's the goal. Having him out there and being a little bit different when he comes back. "Watching from upstairs, watching some other players, what they do well, what they do wrong too. It's a learning process for him right now. That's why we do it.""
""I think we're just playing with speed and making plays - and if mistakes are made, guys are covering for each other and working hard," Mittelstadt said. "And I think we've done a good job sorting things out in the D zone and going up ice from there. So [Sturm] kind of challenged us with the top line of the other team - I feel like we responded well.""
Marco Sturm has used healthy scratches as a motivational and developmental tactic, scratching Mason Lohrei for a third straight game to prompt a response. Players who have been scratched, including Marat Khusnutdinov and Casey Mittelstadt, returned to produce meaningful results, with Khusnutdinov scoring an OT winner and Mittelstadt helping drive a strong second line. Mittelstadt, Pavel Zacha and Viktor Arvidsson led much of the offense in Boston's 2-1 win over Carolina, with Mittelstadt and Arvidsson scoring. Sturm encourages scratched players to observe, learn and return with a different mindset while teammates cover for occasional mistakes.
