Cape Cod magnet fisher pulls 'pristine-looking' derringer pistol from Bridgewater river
""Honestly, at first, I didn't even think of trying to open it. I was like, 'This is probably garbage.'""
""That case did an amazing job keeping that thing in good shape. It looked brand new, even though the case looked like it had been sitting in there for 30 years or so.""
""For me, it was excitement - not because it was necessarily a gun, but because of its uniqueness.""
""Derringer-style pistols date back to the 19th century and are believed to be the type of weapon used in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.""
Nate DeMontigny, a magnet fisher from Cape Cod, found a derringer pistol sealed in a case while fishing in Bridgewater. Initially mistaking the case for garbage, he opened it after knocking it against a bridge. The pistol appeared brand new despite the case's age. DeMontigny reported the find to the police, who documented the firearm. He noted the uniqueness of the discovery, as derringer pistols have historical significance, including their association with President Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
