The Red Hook Pool has closed due to a broken pipe, discovered just before its scheduled opening on June 27. Initially expected to reopen by July 19, repairs are now anticipated to extend at least through mid-August, as custom parts are required. Local residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of communication regarding the closure and alternatives. The pool has a history of damage from Hurricane Sandy, and reconstruction efforts are ongoing according to the parks department's records.
The issue was discovered days before the pool was scheduled to open on June 27, according to Council Member Alexa Avilés, as crews filled the basin with water.
A parks department spokesperson told Brooklyn Paper that the replacement parts need to be custom-made, which will take some time.
Some locals say the city hasn't done enough to keep them informed - or provide alternatives to get them through the summer.
I was first miffed that they announced the closure on the day it was supposed to open,
