April Job Cuts Surge 38% On AI Downsizing

Job cuts increased 38% in April compared with March, reaching 83,387. The figure was the third-highest since 2009 during the Great Recession. Technology companies accounted for 33,361 of the April cuts, and technology layoffs were tied to AI spend and innovation. Hiring plans fell sharply, dropping 69% from 32,826 in March to 10,049 last month. Automotive and entertainment were among the few sectors showing notable year-to-date additions, with 12,258 and 8,261 respectively. Private payrolls rose 109,000 in April, and analysts expected job strength in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data, which added 178,000 jobs in March.
