At sportswear spot Mr. Throwback, there's something for everyone
"My store is actually based on my childhood bedroom. I just wanted to incorporate the '90s nostalgia,"
"I set up every weekend, and I fell in love with it. I would bring jerseys and hats and sneakers and posters and toys, anything '90s sportswear."
"The next day, I'm in the back of the store and somebody opens the door. He goes, 'who's Mr. Throwback?' And I'm like, 'who's asking?' And he pulls down his mask, and it's Spike Lee. He read the article and he was here the next day. And that was, like, the greatest feeling of my life."
Mr. Throwback began as a weekend popup at the former Hell's Kitchen Flea Market selling '90s jerseys, hats, sneakers, posters and toys. The shop reflects the founder's childhood bedroom and a deep passion for '90s sportswear. Growing demand led to a permanent East Village storefront where nostalgia and curated vintage pieces attracted a wide audience. An ESPN feature helped elevate the store's profile and brought celebrity visitors such as Spike Lee, Bruno Mars, Timothée Chalamet and Teyana Taylor. The owner remains committed to offering items for any sports fan despite growing fame.
