Applied Materials is laying off about 4% of its staff, which amounts to roughly 1,400 workers based on a reported headcount of 35,700. The company filed with the SEC and a WARN that shows about 350 layoffs in the Bay Area: 262 in Santa Clara, 86 in Sunnyvale, two remote Bay Area workers and 13 elsewhere in California. Affected roles include engineers, technicians, financial analysts, legal staffers, many managers and 14 vice presidents. The company expects new export restrictions to cost hundreds of millions in revenue, while citing automation, digitalization and geographic shifts as drivers for workforce restructuring.
