"I think sometimes people forget that it is a criminal justice system. Cops, courts and corrections is kind of how I always remember it. And although we did our due diligence, the courts and that part of the system however did not,"
"I don't know what to say other than it's a huge mistake. Wow. How does that happen?"
"Mistakes happen all the time. I've known people that have been released for many different charges, many different occasions. There's a lot of people in there. Human error, right?"
A 20-year-old from Kent, Washington, held in Martinez Detention Facility on local charges, a juvenile warrant out of Sacramento, and an out-of-state homicide arrest warrant was mistakenly released on October 22. The individual had been scheduled for transfer to a Washington jail but left custody instead. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office launched a search and notified local agencies. The U.S. Marshals Service assumed lead responsibility for locating the suspect. News of the release became public several days after the incident. Community members expressed shock and concern while others attributed the error to human mistakes.
