Bay Area interstate shut down after big rig spills almonds, starts brush fire

A fire erupted on Interstate 580 early on Friday morning when an 18-wheel big rig hauling almonds caught fire around 4:30 a.m. The flames spread to surrounding vegetation, creating heavy smoke in the area. All westbound traffic on I-580 was halted as officials worked to clean up the spilled almonds and contain the grass fire. Although fire officials have stopped the forward advancement of the fire, the total acreage impacted remains unknown. Traffic congestion was reported on both I-580 and Interstate 205 due to the incident.
