Corpus, along with other sheriffs and district attorneys elected in 2022, were given special six-year terms under a new state law so that elections for those offices could coincide with presidential elections, with the next one set for 2028."

A special meeting Oct. 28 will gather public suggestions on qualifications and possible appointment approaches. Supervisors are considering three options: appoint someone to finish the remaining three years of Corpus' six-year term, allow Perea to continue until a special or regular election, or appoint a temporary sheriff who agrees to resign before an election. A special election could cost about $3.2 million and might be scheduled as early as February.
