Milpitas renamed its library in honor of Jose Esteves, a six-term mayor instrumental in its construction. The sign unveiling occurred on July 19. Esteves, who has a background in engineering, proposed funding measures and managed infrastructure planning for the library. Opened in 2009, it’s now the largest library in Santa Clara County, having served over 1.5 million visitors. Esteves values education and recognized the library as an essential resource for children, parents, and teachers. The library features a parking garage to enhance accessibility for patrons.
Esteves proposed Measures H and I to fund the library project, secured money when there was still a redevelopment agency, then started planning infrastructure. With his engineering background, he got involved with most of the details of building the library.
I value education and knowledge. A library is the first thing we should give our children, said Esteves, his voice sometimes breaking. When I see the sign, it honors parents and teachers, especially immigrants looking for a better life and future.
