Owned for nearly fifty years by Kenny Reed, the bar is described as a respite and social hub. Reed, characterized as a practical joker with a deep understanding of human nature, passed away last summer, leaving a palpable void. His daughter, Trisha Fike, now operates the bar and recalls her father's intellectual personality. Reed was also outspoken against California's smoking ban, choosing to defy the law as a form of protest.
Kenny Reed, owner of Guthrie's Alley Cat bar in Bakersfield, said: 'Aside from telling customers what the law is, we have no interest in enforcing it. That's all I'm going to do unless there is outside enforcement. And I'm willing to take a fine as a symbolic protest.'
Reed's daughter, Trisha Fike, remarked on her father's intellect: 'He was a very intellectual dude. A sociology professor back in another life... He understood the human condition very well.'
