Ken Johnston, a Philadelphia-based artist, is retracing the paths of civil rights pioneers through a two-week Walk to Freedom from Niagara Falls to Owen Sound, Ontario. This summer's journey commemorates the 200th birthday of Harriet Tubman and invites individuals of all backgrounds to participate. Johnston aims to foster a deeper understanding of the complex narratives surrounding freedom seekers, emphasizing that their stories are more nuanced than the common perception of just reaching freedom. The trek will include stops at historically significant locations and engage descendants of those who traveled the Underground Railroad.
Many narratives focus on freedom seekers reaching the border and being free, but the journey was much more complex and diverse, with many stories still untold.
By retracing these historical trails, I hope to engage people in a sensory experience of what freedom seekers endured, honoring their legacy in a deeply personal way.
