"To steal, damage and traffic in such property is to breach that trust... there is an element of trust in our society that allows such properties to be displayed."
"The portrait means a lot more than just a print that's available anywhere else... we're happy to see that Canadian history is recognised."
Jeffrey Wood was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for stealing a renowned photograph of Sir Winston Churchill from Ottawa's Chateau Laurier hotel. The portrait, captured by Yousaf Karsh in 1941 and considered a significant piece of Canadian history, went missing in 2022 when hotel staff discovered it had been replaced with a fake. Wood claimed he stole it to help his brother financially. The photograph was later found in Italy, with a buyer unaware of its stolen status. Judge Robert Wadden emphasized the breach of trust involved in such thefts.
