"I understand the priorities of our community, and at this crucial moment for our country, I believe we must come together to build a stronger, more united and more prosperous Canada."
Doly Begum is launching a bid for federal office as the Liberal candidate in Scarborough Southwest, the riding Bill Blair held since 2015. Begum represented Scarborough Southwest provincially for the Ontario NDP from 2018 until her recent resignation ahead of the federal byelection. Bill Blair resigned from the House of Commons and will become Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in the spring. The federal Liberals previously nominated Dr. Danielle Martin in University–Rosedale. Begum was born in Sylhet, immigrated to Scarborough as a child, earned degrees at the University of Toronto and University College London, and has held local community leadership roles and provincial critic responsibilities.
