Bill Blair has been appointed Canada's high commissioner to the U.K. and is expected to resign his seat as a Member of Parliament. Nathalie Drouin has been appointed Canada's ambassador to France. Both appointments will take effect this spring. The appointments are presented as part of efforts to deepen partnerships with the United Kingdom and France across trade, investment and defence and to strengthen the multilateral system while increasing certainty, stability, security and prosperity across the Atlantic. Blair served as Toronto police chief, was first elected in 2015, and held several cabinet roles, most notably as defence minister under former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Blair retained the defence portfolio after Prime Minister Mark Carney was sworn in but was moved to the back benches after April's election.
