Compliance with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) allows Canadian exporters to bypass U.S. tariffs imposed by President Trump. A significant amendment excludes goods meeting CUSMA terms from tariffs originally set at 25% on most Canadian exports, except for energy and potash. Current exemptions make approximately 86% of Canada's export value eligible for duty-free treatment under CUSMA. This compliance presents a substantial advantage for Canadian businesses compared to other countries, which still face comprehensive tariffs from the U.S.
Around 86 per cent of the value of Canada's exports to the U.S. have the potential to qualify for the CUSMA exemption and cross the border without tariffs.
Trump quickly amended those tariffs, exempting products that qualify for duty-free status under CUSMA. That exemption originally characterized as a one-month pause remains in effect.
