Ontario Liberals candidates for Scarborough Southwest make jabs during nomination race | CBC News
"While I ran for the leadership in 2023 without a seat, just by happenstance ... there's going to be a byelection in basically my backyard,"
"I don't think that it's up for debate,"
"He has explicitly said that he ran here so that he can have a seat to run for leader."
"Jackson, who faced off against Begum in the 2025 provincial election as the Liberal candidate for Scarborough Southwest, said most of the time previous candidates don't face a nomination battle when they want to run again."
The Scarborough Southwest provincial seat is vacant after the former representative moved to federal politics, and a Liberal nomination race is nearing its conclusion. Members will select a candidate for an upcoming byelection, though the byelection has not yet been called. Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith has drawn scrutiny for seeking the Ontario Liberal Party leadership again while also pursuing the nomination in Scarborough Southwest. He has suggested he would not challenge his friend Mary-Margaret McMahon, the current Liberal MPP for Beaches-East York. Other candidates accuse Erskine-Smith of using the riding as a springboard for a leadership bid, arguing that he explicitly ran to obtain a seat for leadership.
