An active radar seeker and an air-breathing jet engine let the Meteor maintain speed until intercept, producing a large "no-escape zone" that makes evasion difficult. Sweden first fielded the Meteor in 2016. The missiles are viewed as key tools to counter aircraft delivering guided aerial bombs from standoff ranges.
