Paddy Lambros, CEO of Dex, initiates interviews by inviting candidates to ask questions. He believes that strong candidates demonstrate their preparation and interest through insightful queries. This approach helps reveal how engaged candidates are and indicates their perspective on the job opportunity. Lambros views interviews as akin to discovery calls, a method he adopted early in his career inspired by sales literature. With over 10,000 candidates interviewed, he notes that insightful questioning is more challenging for candidates than presenting rehearsed answers.
"Your questions are a huge tell," said Lambros, CEO and cofounder of the AI startup Dex. The best candidates usually ask interesting questions and have clearly done their research.
Lambros said that candidates' answers often signal what they think about the opportunity and the reality of the job. "It speaks to just their level of interest, their level of engagement," he said.
He came to this method early in his career after reading various books on sales, thinking of an interview more like a discovery call.
Signs of a top performer often stem from their ability to ask insightful questions, which may not be as easy to prepare as rehearsed answers.
