Waymo recalls robotaxis for driving on flooded roads
"That system has been recalled five times, including for driving passed stopped school buses and crashing into stationary objects. The sixth generation system is designed to work seamlessly across multiple vehicle types, starting with the Zeekr RT minivan ( rebranded as Ojai) and followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Waymo is in talks with other automakers, including Toyota, about future models."
Waymo recalled 3,791 vehicles using its fifth and sixth generation autonomous driving systems. A robotaxi encountered an untraversable flooded roadway section with a 40 mph speed limit, detected the flooded road, and proceeded at reduced speed. No injuries were reported. Waymo said it is working on a remedy and has updated vehicles to increase weather-related constraints and update vehicle maps in the interim. The recall underscores risks for driverless systems when extreme weather alters road conditions. Waymo has operated mainly in warmer, drier cities such as Phoenix, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin, and its expansion to East Coast cities will test its ability to handle adverse weather. The recall is the first for the sixth generation system, which is intended for high volume production.
