"This was in July 1971 and the Kennedy Center had just opened a few weeks prior to our performance. It was a brand-new venue and they were looking at inaugurating the venue with acts that were meaningful and exciting. We were invited to perform and we did. And of course, being that it was a historic appearance, we recorded the performance."
"It was also the first time we performed 'Saturday in the Park' live. It hadn't even been recorded yet and we hadn't even decided who was going to sing it. Peter Cetera is singing the lead for this performance. It wasn't until we went into the studio to complete the recording of Chicago V, which included 'Saturday in the Park,' did Robert [Lamm] end up singing the lead vocal on his song 'Saturday in the Park.'"
James Pankow is a founding member, trombone player, arranger and songwriter for Chicago who recently spent time with grandchildren on the West Coast. Chicago averages 80 to 100 shows per year and is supporting a newly released 4-LP/3-CD set capturing the September 16, 1971 performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center performance occurred shortly after the venue opened and was recorded; it features the live debut of "Saturday in the Park" with Peter Cetera on lead. The set presents early standards like 'Colour My World' and proggy compositions from Chicago's pre-1980s era.
