"We moved due to the [Russian-Ukrainian] war, and we wanted to bring our understanding of hospitality and modern food to the United States,"
"Kazka is a daily people's place, so everyone can find something for themselves here."
"I was honestly surprised, but it's our top seller. Everybody wants to try it, and people love it,"
Roman and Maria Semeniv relocated from Ukraine to Chicago in 2023 with their two children after selling previous restaurants. They opened Kazka City Cafe in Lakeview offering all-day breakfast and brunch daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., pastries, specialty drinks, and Metric coffee. Maria produces croissants, pecan rolls, macarons, breads, and desserts including pistachio cheesecake. The menu was developed with Kyiv chefs Daria Trofimenkova and Oleksandr Trofimenkov and features syrnyky, shakshuka with a secret sauce ingredient, avocado toast, pancakes with berries, and eggs Benedict. The cafe offers matcha lattes in flavors like mango-passionfruit and rose and plans collaborations to sell black caviar and a potential sturgeon roe dish.
