Kris Bryant emerged as the Cubs' top prospect and began his major-league career with Rookie of the Year honors in 2015 and an MVP as part of a World Series championship. He produced three consecutive seasons (2015–2017) of 6.0 fWAR or more before injuries slowed him in 2018. He returned with 31 homers in 2019 but faltered in 2020. After a midcareer trade in 2021 and a free-agent signing with the Rockies, Bryant has made only 712 plate appearances over four years in Denver. Degenerative lumbar disc disease forced a mid-April shutdown and persistent pain has limited activity despite multiple treatments, creating daily physical and mental struggles.
