"The real shock was when the first people died because we just didn't know what this was. We heard she had been taken on to the flight to Johannesburg in a wheelchair, though of course there's an awful lot of rumours."

The MV Hondius is currently docked off Cape Verde with two Irish passengers onboard. Three passengers have died, including a 70-year-old Dutch man and his 69-year-old wife. A British passenger is in critical condition in Johannesburg. Cape Verde health authorities have denied the ship permission to dock in Praia as a precaution. The ship's doctor and a staff member have also fallen ill. Ann Lane, a passenger, expressed shock at the deaths and praised the crew's performance during the crisis.
