What is hantavirus? Symptoms, spread and what we know about the cruise ship outbreak - Poynter
"Hantavirus is generally spread through rodent urine and feces that is aerosolized and inhaled. However, there is a strain in Argentina that has some evidence of person-to-person transmission."
"A case of hantavirus on a cruise ship is puzzling. The outbreak raises questions about whether the affected individuals had a common exposure before boarding or if there were rodents on the ship."
A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship resulted in the deaths of three passengers, including a Dutch couple. The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, had around 150 passengers and traveled from Ushuaia, Argentina, to various locations before anchoring off Cape Verde. The World Health Organization reported five additional passengers are suspected of contracting the virus. Experts are investigating whether the illness stemmed from common exposure before boarding or from rodents on the ship, as hantavirus is typically spread through rodent droppings.
