Cultural background significantly affects design perspectives. India is characterized by a maximalist approach where abundance and noise dominate. In contrast, the Netherlands values minimalism, leading to challenges when transitioning to this new environment. A maximalist portfolio initially did not align with local expectations, requiring a shift towards a more understated design style. This adjustment involved minimizing bold elements in favor of simplicity and clarity in design expression, essential for succeeding in the Dutch UX job market.
I am born and brought up in India, where more means more. We are not a 'minimalist' country, and neither are our apps or digital products. Our markets or bazaars are noisy, crowded, with posters and billboards screaming for attention.
My maximalist portfolio did not work! My designs were too loud and brandish for most companies I initially applied to. I toned down my work. I learned how to express myself with minimalism.
