Retrouvius book: Contemporary Salvage, Designing Homes from a Philosophy of Reuse
"We just couldn't believe we were seeing materials and building components of significant value routinely discarded,"
"I remember being in Guy and Natasha Hill's home and thinking, 'Oh, that's what I need, a museum cabinet to cover my dishwasher,"
"Our mission has become to enable and inspire re-use, not just as a design preference, but as an attitude,"
"Responsibility, resourcefulness, respect, and repair-aren't these qualities more valuable today than ever?"
Retrouvius operates as a combined salvage business and design studio founded by Maria Speake and Adam Hills. The founders met as architecture students in Glasgow in the early 1990s and began rescuing valuable materials after witnessing the demolition of historic structures. The business recovers architectural elements, furniture, lighting, and fixtures—from Art Deco mirrored paneling to wooden cigar molds—and integrates them into commissioned home projects. Adam sources salvaged items while Maria and her team incorporate rescued pieces into client commissions. The book Retrouvius compiles these house projects and champions reuse as an attitude grounded in responsibility, resourcefulness, respect, and repair.
