Singapore's digital minister, Josephine Teo, emphasized the importance of affordable AI models, such as China's DeepSeek, at the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference. She noted that these innovations are valuable in reducing costs for companies exploring AI technology. DeepSeek successfully demonstrated high-performance AI models while requiring fewer resources for training, which led to significant market shifts in U.S. tech stocks. Teo explained that AI trained mainly on English may not cater to the diverse language contexts of Southeast Asia, highlighting the need for localized solutions.
"From the perspective of bringing down costs, innovations such as DeepSeek are very welcome," she said.
"We know that large language models that are trained primarily on a Western corpus, primarily on perhaps English as the language, will have difficulties being applied in the Southeast Asian context," she explained.
