He previously worked as an engineer at Meta and had experience as a tech founder. Past Maps provides historical maps for a region with a modern map overlaid, including opacity controls to fade between views. The historical map data comes from publicly available sources such as the US Geological Survey, while Campbell developed the interactive tools. He created the service to support his metal detection hobby by locating old structures and trails, then shared the map tooling on Reddit to attract users.
