"For me, it's someone I've honored, respected, and followed. Growing up here in East Oakland, Chavez's organizing motivated many of us to not only speak out on behalf of our communities but to do the work...advocating for the humanity of not just farmworkers but those of us in the neighborhood."
"The story and legacy of César Chavez and Dolores Huerta are in the DNA of many of our organizations. Especially here in the Fruitvale. We stand in solidarity with Dolores Huerta and all survivors impacted by these actions, and we honor the courage of those who have spoken up about childhood abuse."
César Chavez, the legendary farmworker movement leader whose name adorns East Bay parks, schools, and libraries, is now facing serious allegations of sexual abuse and assault reported by the New York Times. The accusations include abuse of United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta and children of close advisors. Local leaders and organizations in Oakland's heavily Latino Fruitvale District, who were inspired by Chavez's organizing work and considered him a hero, expressed profound disappointment and heartbreak upon learning of these allegations. Community organizations like the Unity Council, which has served the Latino community since 1964, issued statements expressing solidarity with survivors and honoring those who spoke out about the abuse.
