"The series kicks off on Juneteenth with “Fruitvale Station,” the first feature film by Oakland's Oscar-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler. The screenings will take place every Friday at 7 p.m. from June 19 through July 24. Tickets for all the screenings will go on sale Friday, May 8, at noon."
"“All of the films that we chose this year are Bay Area-themed in one way or another, or Paramount-themed, some less obvious than others,” Blackwell said. Coogler's “Fruitvale Station” is the story about Oscar Grant, the young man shot and killed by a BART police officer in 2009. In another Oakland connection, one of Prince's last shows, months before his death, took place at the Paramount."
"Blackwell said he paused the series due to dipping attendance, challenges with the theater's sound system, and the poor quality of the 35-millimeter prints that the theater was receiving to show on the big screen. In 2023, the theater was renovated, including the addition of a new Meyer Sound reinforcement loudspeaker system."
"“There was a desire to bring the series back, but I did not want to do that without knowing that we had resolved our sound system issues, and that we could get access to good prints,” he said."
The Paramount Theatre is relaunching a 35-millimeter movie classics series after a hiatus since 2018. The series begins on Juneteenth with “Fruitvale Station,” the first feature film by Oakland filmmaker Ryan Coogler, and runs every Friday at 7 p.m. from June 19 through July 24. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 8 at noon. Other scheduled films include Disney’s “Fantasia,” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and “The Maltese Falcon,” along with Bay Area–connected titles such as “Mrs. Doubtfire.” The theater previously paused the series due to declining attendance, sound system problems, and poor-quality 35-millimeter prints. Renovations in 2023 added a new Meyer Sound reinforcement loudspeaker system and improved access to better prints.
