Hotly anticipated Asian grocery store opens in Emeryville to crowd of 8,000
"Emeryville's dynamic and culturally rich environment makes it an ideal home for Tokyo Central,"
"The community's appreciation for global flavors and creative living aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver authentic Japanese products and experiences."
"We don't have any of these nearby so I was like, it'll be cool to check it out,"
"I didn't know anything about it until she told me about it, but I'm really excited,"
More than 8,000 customers attended the grand opening of Tokyo Central at Bay Street Emeryville, with some shoppers lining up overnight and others arriving before dawn. Shoppers cited proximity, produce and Japanese beauty products as key attractions. Bay Street has shifted toward a foodie destination after multiple restaurant and dessert openings in 2023 and 2024. CenterCal acquired the mall in 2021 when it was about 30% vacant and later announced Tokyo Central for the 40,635-square-foot anchor space in August 2024. The mall now sits just two spaces shy of full occupancy.
